Home Water Filtration Systems

Anybody have any recommendations on a good home water filtration system? I'm sick of always buying bottled water for drinking and want to stop using tap water for cooking.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I use the berkey light system - seems to work good for me.

But I was primarily looking for some type of system that would take out the arsenic, fluoride, chlorine, etc., out of the tap water as well.

Silverwine buy only the filters and make your own system by using two five gallons buckets......works the same way and a lot cheaper.

You need either distiller or RO system. Distillers are expensive and maintenance is a bit involving, so I prefer RO. I bought mine from freedrinkingwater.com . No problems in 2 years except that the UV lamp died today and they don't sell replacement lamps on the website. I filter fluoridated water, so it doesn't matter for me anyway since it doesn't have bacteria in it

When I travel I always take my two rods of silver and my three nine volts and sap my water of 30 seconds before drinking it, works just fine.

Talk about getting everything out of your investment. Speaking of using silver to purify water, I have read numerous times, as I'm sure everyone here on this forum has, that in the old days they used to put a silver coin in their water or even milk to keep it pure. I'm not sure that this works very well, for if it does, heck, I'll just drop an Englehard at the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket of water and be done with it, but I would still have the arsenic-floride-chlorine problem, but for survival water, I wonder if using silver this way would work.

My buddy just bought the stainless one but now wishes he bought the clear plastic one because you can't tell when its almost empty. (his words)

Also, he said you need a special filter for the berkey to remove fluoride, which he purchased. But he said it made the water taste horrible. Plus it was made from some type of aluminum. He returned the special fluoride filter but still kept the Berkey.

Can someone who owns one verify this?

I don't use the PF 2 flouride remover because I have well water. You can actually just get the berkey filters and a couple of lexan water bottles from Poland Spring, Deer Park or Zephyr Hills and just cut the holes for the filters to screw into. It's such a simple system but the filters work so well. You can see the sediment that's filtered out and the water really does taste pure.

The light on the bottom of the stand kinda sucks. It looked nice in the begining but water leaked into the base (by me overfilling the top container, and by condensation) and rusted out the unit. Anyway, the filter is functional and I recently bought a few replacement filters as back-up.

These are very good RO systems. I have the 90 gallon per day unit. With it dripping into a plastic 250 gallon tank. Nice system. But I would prefer distilled and will probably get one of those stainless steel water distillers eventually.
